What is an eBook?

American Heart Association (AHA) eBooks allow users to read publications on personal computers and mobile devices. Users can read eBooks online or download them for offline reading.

What is a course digital video?

AHA course digital videos are available in streaming/downloadable format and feature the same content as the course DVDs. This format allows instructors to stream course digital videos online or download them on the AHA eBooks Reader app and is an alternative option to DVDs and DVD players. Course digital videos are to be used by AHA instructors teaching courses.

What are my rights to the content?

eBooks: When you purchase an eBook or redeem an access code, you are obtaining the right to read the content online as well as download it to your own device to be accessed offline. These rights are subject to technology conditions and limitations as well contractual agreements between the AHA and its vendors.

Digital videos: When you purchase a  digital video or redeem an access code, you are obtaining the right to watch the content online or in the AHA eBook Reader App. Your access to purchased digital videos will not expire but new editions of the product will need to be purchased separately. These rights are subject to technology conditions and limitations as well as contractual agreements between the AHA and its vendors.

If the science in an eBook changes, or if there are updates to the course details before the new edi

Individual AHA eBooks are updated if/when there are major science changes, the course details change, errors occur, or other updates are needed for the edition of the book purchased. Otherwise, supplementary materials with minor changes will be provided. When a new edition of an eBook is officially released, it is considered a new product and the previous edition becomes outdated. You will have to purchase a new edition whenever they become available.

Can I share my eBooks and course digital videos among multiple users?

AHA eBooks and course digital videos are linked to an individual’s eBookstore account. The AHA does not condone the sharing of username/login credentials among multiple users.

What is the device limit for eBooks and course digital videos?

Your AHA eBookstore account can be logged into a maximum of three devices at once. If you attempt to login into any additional devices, you will be prompted to remove a device from your account. Devices can be managed in the Profile section of the eBookstore under Device List or you can remove devices by logging out on the device you wish to remove. Course digital videos and eBooks are for single users and are intended to be viewed on one device at a time.

What types of files are eBooks and course digital videos and what are their restrictions?

Additional information about AHA eBooks:

  • AHA eBooks are encrypted PDF/ePub2 files.
  • AHA course digital videos are .mp4 files.
  • You can download eBooks to the AHA eBook Reader app on your personal computer for offline viewing (PC or Mac). You cannot use a third-party application to read AHA eBooks.
  • AHA eBooks cannot be printed.
  • eBooks purchased through the AHA eBookstore cannot be read on Apple’s iBook app or any other third-party readers (e.g. Kindle, Barnes and Noble eReader, Stanza, Mobipocket Reader, Microsoft Reader). They must be accessed through the AHA eBook Reader app or online.
  • eBooks and course digital videos purchased on the AHA eBookstore cannot be copied to a flash drive.

What is a required exercise?

Courses are comprised of modules that include exercises to reinforce and check that students understand the information. We refer to these as required exercises. Required exercises are mandatory and require 100% accuracy to complete the course.

How do I move through the exercises?

Course pages feature arrows to use for navigation. Click the arrows to proceed to the next page in the course.

Do I need to save my completed exercises?

No, once you complete an exercise it is automatically saved and appears with a "Review" on the course home page, with a checkmark to the left of the exercise title. Your work in an exercise, however, will not be saved if you log out before you finish that exercise.

Can I take a break while working in a course?

Yes. You can enter and exit a course as often as necessary. If you are not active in the course for 30 minutes, your user session will time out. When this happens, you will see a message that your session expired. Simply log in again and return to the course. You will see all of your completed exercises have been saved.

For courses that require an online test, the test must be completed in a single session with no breaks.

How do I show I completed an online course?

After successfully completing the online course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.

  1. Go to elearning.heart.org/certificates
  2. In the Completion Certificates column, click the mail icon to email your certificate or click the download icon to download your certificate and print.

No. Your account is unique to your email address and only one person’s name can be listed on any account.

How long is the certificate for my online course valid in order to take a skills session?

The certificate from the online course is valid for up to one year from the completion date in order to participate in a Skills Session. However, you should review the information in the online course within a few days prior to participating in a Skills Session. In some circumstances, completing an online course more than a few days prior to a Skills Session has prevented students from being successful in those Skills Sessions.

The AHA has adopted an open-resource policy for all exams. Open resource means that students may use resources as a reference while completing the exam. Resources could include the provider manual, either in printed form or as an eBook on personal devices, any notes the student took during the provider course, etc.

Please remember to bring an Internet-enabled device (smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc) to class so you can use your eBook for reference on the exam. You may choose to bring two devices to class so you have one to access your eBook and another to complete the Online Exam on.

An Internet connection issue during your class may prevent you from accessing your eProduct. APHE recommends that you download the AHA eBook Reader App on your Internet-enabled device prior to coming to class. To do so, visit ebooks.heart.org and click “Download AHA eBook Reader App” in the upper right corner of the screen.

AHA ONLINE EXAM Helpful Tips

Information about the Online Exam

Download Online Exam information including FAQs and technical specifications (.pdf)

The American Heart Association (AHA) has developed Online Exams, which are the preferred method for administering AHA exams, as exam security is improved and the AHA can collect key performance data. The AHA and APHE expect all instructors to administer Online Exams.

When you arrive at your class, you will digitally sign in using an Internet-enabled device and provide an email address that you can access on your device during the class. Near the end of your class, your instructor will send you an email with a link to your Online Exam.

To Activate & Take the Online Exam

1. Open your email and click (or tap) the link to open the exam.

2. Click (or tap) “ACTIVATE COURSE”

3. “Sign In” or “Create an Account”

4. Under “Recent Activity,” find the “BLS Online Exam for Instructor-Led Training” and click (or tap) “START.” If you do not see “Recent Activity,” refresh your browser.

5. On a new screen, you will see “Open-Resource Policy,” which you can read and close.

6. Read the instructions and click (or tap) “Start” to begin the Online Exam.

**Do not attempt to “go back,” as this will cause the exam to restart.

7. After you complete the final question of the exam, your screen will display your score and any questions that you answered incorrectly. Notify your instructor that you have completed the exam, and your instructor will go through your exam results with you.

8. A passing exam score is 84% or higher. If your score is lower than 84%, you must retake the exam. After you click “CONTINUE,” you will start your next exam attempt.

9. When you have passed the exam and reviewed the questions that you answered incorrectly, click “EXIT EXERCISE” (top right of the screen).

10. Click (or tap) “PROVIDE SURVEY.”

11. When you have completed the survey, show your device to your instructor. When your instructor verifies that your exam and survey are complete and lets you know, you have completed the course and are free to leave the class.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the Association.
